Manufacturing Process: Tumbling

After sawing, parts are often tumbled to ensure that burrs are removed prior to shipment or plating. Vibratory finishing, the technical word for tumbling, involves subjecting the parts to vibration while they are in contact with media. The media is specifically made to create friction with the components, which effectively polishes them in a regulated way. The proportion of pieces to media and the duration that the parts stay in the tumbler are governed by predetermined guidelines.

A vibratory tumbler is a large doughnut-shaped drum with parts that rotate in a circular direction while the drum shakes at a high speed. This causes the tumbling media and parts to scrub against each other abrading the parts and removing burrs. Following the appropriate duration of production, the tumblers drain into a conveyor belt and proceed via a dryer and cleaner. The rust inhibitors in the cleaning and dryer help to prolong the life of plain finish items. Improper handling and storage, as well as environmental conditions, can have a negative impact on shelf life. It’s important to take precautions to prevent dropping components over long distances where the edges could ping or touching the parts with your bare hands where contaminants and oils could get on them.

After every production step that results in burrs or after heat treating, when parts have black scale that needs to be removed, the tumbling process is carried out. In rare cases, vigorous vibratory media and longer finishing times can remove as much as 0.0005″ of material. When compared to machine removal techniques like milling or grinding, this method of changing tolerances and dimensions is typically more economical. On all surfaces, removal is consistent but not precise.
